Petition update 2 from the council, 28 June 2011

The Mayor introduced the petition for consideration and invited Councillor Corinna Smart, the Executive Member for Environment, to speak to it.

Councillor Smart advised Members that the trees in question were part of the Mayor of London’s tree planting scheme and that all residents in Lionel Road, including the school in question, had been provided with a leaflet about the tree planting proposals there in line with the Council’s requirement for consultation to take place on this issue. Some residents had responded and their views had been taken into consideration, but there was no response from the school objecting to the planting of trees outside its walls.

She also advised that officers disputed some of the claims made by the school about the effect of the trees and so she had asked officers to investigate further and would not make a decision on the future of the trees until such time as she was satisfied that there was clarity about the issue.

Councillor Brad Fisher advised that if the trees were to be removed, he knew of several places that would be happy to receive them. In response, Councillor Smart advised that there was a list of people in the Borough who were keen to have trees planted in the streets outside their house.

The Mayor then put the matter to the vote and it was RESOLVED.

Petition update 1 from the council, 28 March 2011

This petition will be presented to Borough Council on 5/4/2011.

More details from petition creator

We object to the trees planted directly outside our school for the following reasons : 1. there are already a large number of trees on the school site and in Gunnesbury Park 2. roots from park trees grow into and block school drains which has cost us a lot of money in past years as well as causing flooding 3. clearance of fallen leaves from drains, guttering and pathways is already a huge problem 4. the school was not consulted prior to the trees being planted
