Petition update from the council, 28 June 2011

The Mayor briefly introduced the petition and, in the absence of Councillor Gurmail Lal, the Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health, he invited Councillor Jagdish Sharma to respond to
it.

Councillor Sharma thanked the organisers of the petitions for their submission and acknowledged the strength of feeling on the matter of the possible closure of Canal House. He noted a recent presentation to the Overview and Scrutiny Committee on the matter but advised that the Council was required to make savings of £60 million pounds over four years, which was an unprecedented amount. However, there was a consultation exercise on Canal House and similar premises and that a final report would be presented to the Council at its meeting in
future.

Councillor Pamela Fisher stated that she supported the views of the residents strongly. She regretted the need for financial cuts but blamed the last Government for making the situation worse than it need be, and she asked the Council to think more carefully about how and where it intended to make service reductions. She noted that many of the cuts seemed to be affecting people with mental health problems more profoundly than other vulnerable groups and she asked the Council to rethink its approach.

The Mayor then put the matter to the vote and it was
